4 February

Max is doing well right now, not as good as yesterday, but good all the same. Yesterday I went in for rounds and it was decided to decrease the CPAP pressure to 5, and for me to have a cuddle with Max in nasal prongs only (Max, not me!).
Changing him over from CPAP to prongs was quite traumatic, with a couple of braddys, but Nikki and Gabriel (nurses) persisted, and he did reasonably well throughout the cuddle. He was well awake for most of it, waving his arms about and looking around. Eventually he fell asleep.
When I left he was nice and settled. I went back at about 3pm – and he was still on nasal prongs! Clever boy, showing off! They put him back on CPAP at about 3.45pm as he seemed to be tiring a bit. He was visibly better after that, and immediately on 21% rather than 29% O2. So – 6 hours on nasal oxygen only.
Today he wasn’t quite such a show-off. But, he transferred to prongs much more easily, and Mark had a decent cuddle, during which Max was pretty good – only a couple of big desats, and mostly he got himself out of them, sometimes needing a couple of percent more O2. He was quite settled when we put him back, but it was clear that he needed CPAP.
I noticed he’d had a couple of big braddys (2-3 hours apart) overnight, with the note ‘pale’ next to them. I wonder if this shows residual tiredness from the marathon effort yesterday.
Weight (on 3 Feb) = 1585g.
