Well, we’re still waiting for Max’s bowel to start working. This could take a few days, and is due to the fact that simply because it was handled (during surgery) a form of ‘stasis’ sets in, and it takes a while for the normal peristalsis movements of the bowel to recommence.
Also, because the lower part of his small intestine, and his entire colon, have not been in use for so long, those muscles have atrophied somewhat, and will take a while to get going again. Even when his bowel does start moving, there’s not a lot in his bowel, and nothing in his stomach, so we’re relying on either a small bowel movement or sounds from the gut to tell us what’s going on. So, every so often, the nurses listen to his gut with the stethoscope to see if there’s anything happening.
It’s feeling interminably slow.
